Well, after completing the comic this evening, I went out to the local theater to watch Daffy Duck and Porky Pig in The Day The Earth Blew Up! I really enjoyed it. It has its flaws, as one might expect, but as the first feature-length all-animated Looney Tunes movie – let alone that rarest of creatures these days, a classically (that is, hand-drawn instead of computer) animated movie produced in the United States, it is a delight. I absolutely give it my endorsement, and you should go see it during the five minutes it's likely to be out in theaters.
For some arcane reason that must make sense to accountants, Warner Bros. keeps producing films and then either not releasing them at all or else just not advertising them. Remember the Batgirl movie debacle? And Coyote Vs. Acme? This one wouldn't have seen the light of day except some outside distributor called Ketchup Entertainment picked it up, and thank goodness they did. Sadly, Warners is not spending a penny on advertising it, and I'm certain most people don't even know the film exists.
Anyway, please cast your financial vote in favor of classical animation and go see it. Because it is a lot of fun. The animation is great, done in imitation of Bob Clampett's style. After all these years, Petunia Pig finally gets something to do, and she's adorable. Daffy and Porky's characterizations are their 1940s selves, with Daffy wacky and crazy rather than greedy and scheming, and that's fine. The humor is remarkably character-based, which I think is a good decision. Anyway, I really liked it.
